Recently started selling apps with recurring monthly charges; I can’t spend $36/yr for a weather app or a newsreader

E-mail

Only displays partial formatting from HTML messages

Limited ability to view PDF and Word documents, no ability to view Excel or PowerPoint

Does not allow you to retrieve POP e-mail on demand; you have to wait until their server gets around to you

Used to be able to hit Menu+U in Mail to force it to download POP mail right away, but does not seem to work any more

From what I hear, treats IMAP servers as POP servers, and doesn’t replicate changes back to the server

All mailboxes limited to combined 6GB storage

My SK is set up to POP my e-mail (but leave it on the server), and to automatically delete the oldest e-mails when the 6GB box has filled up.  That way, I can use it to keep up on what’s new, but never have to worry about deleting old mail.

Phone

Mediocre reception, although better than my iPhone at home

Wonky open-type-close action each time you dial a call

Web browser

Often slow, but will sometimes still beat iPhone on EDGE

No good way to edit bookmarks except for the phone itself

Has a tough time rendering some transparent PNGs - yuck!

Physical device

This thing is huge.  Lucky for me, I started my whole gadget career with a PalmPilot. And I have big pockets.

The flip?  Not as suave as the SK2 flip.  Kinda bumpy.

Can’t charge it using the USB port.  What the heck?

Mini-headphone jack.  Boo, hiss.  iPhone got this right.

Shoulder buttons, volume, and power hard to find by touch; the SK2 was much better in this case as well.

I really, really wish this thing had wifi

So that’s where we stand.  I’ve bought and sold a series of devices off of craigslist and eBay, but keep coming back to the Sidekick as my favorite device.  I’m also loving some of the features of the iPhone, but I’m not convinced that it will ever become my primary device.  So for now?  My lame fanboy self is carrying around two (yes, count ‘em, two) device.  Pffft.
